Maybe he's the victim of a schmear campaign.The owner of famed H&H Bagels was arrested Wednesday on charges he pocketed more than $400,000 in employee taxes that were due the city and state.
Bagel baron Helmer Toro created fake companies with bogus names to pull off the scheme, charged Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau.
"Not guilty," Toro, 59, whispered as he was arraigned on a grand larceny indictment in Manhattan Supreme Court.
Toro stole nearly $370,000 in city and state withholding taxes paid by 100 workers and kept an additional $33,000 he owed in unemployment insurance fund taxes, prosecutors said.
His upper West Side store was briefly shut six months ago for failure to pay taxes. Read more...

Police say a bicyclist was hit by a car on Route 70 while the driver was texting about a drug deal.Robert J. Sharrer, 28, of New Jersey Avenue in Pemberton Township, has been charged with drug possession with the intent to distribute after an undisclosed amount of unauthorized prescription drugs were found in his car Monday, police said. The US has soccer hooligans? Who knew?
A Worcester man charged with fatally shooting his roommate during what police say was an argument over a televised soccer match has been ordered held without bail.Felix Garcia was arraigned Thursday in Central District Court on a murder charge.
Authorities said Garcia, who has at least two aliases, shot Juan Manuel Trejo Hernandez, 26, twice in the back on Oct. 25 during an argument over the soccer game. The men had been drinking. Read more...
