Because it's really easy to confuse vodka and radio?

Virgin Radio was bought by the Times of India in June and part of that deal was that the station would be renamed. It was relaunched as Absolute Radio last month.

A spokeswoman for The Absolut Company confirmed that a High Court action had been taken because there was a risk of confusion and of Absolute Radio 'passing off' its services as Absolut's.

A spokeswoman for Absoloute Radio confirmed that it had received notice of the case. "They want us to stop using the Absolute Radio name and they want to cancel the registration of our trade mark because they feel it is too similar to theirs," said the Absolute Radio spokeswoman.

"We think the two are completely different, ours is a music and entertainment brand, theirs is a vodka drinks brand, and we are confident that our listeners recognise the difference between the two, as would Absolut's drinkers," said the Absolute Radio spokeswoman.

One trade mark law expert said, though, that Absolut may well have a strong case because their promotional activities have extended into areas other than just the selling of vodka. more...

Definitely not a candidate for Mum Of The Year

A mother was called a ' disgrace' yesterday for buying her 13-year-old daughter and two friends a bottle of vodka, three bottles of wine and two alcopops as they set off on a charity walk.

After 40-year-old Carol Jones gave them the alcohol, the girls disguised it in soft drink bottles to avoid detection by teachers.

Her daughter Kayleigh and her friends, also 13, were later spotted in a 'paralytic' condition at a checkpoint on the seven-mile sponsored hike.

One of the teenagers was treated by paramedics after drinking so much she became violently ill and lost consciousness.

Yet despite Mrs Jones's actions, police gave her only an £80 on-the-spot fine. more...

Hard time facing the music…nyuk nyuk

A defendant had a hard time facing the music in western Ohio.

Andrew Cactor of Urbana was looking at a $150 fine for playing rap music too loudly on his car stereo.

But a judge offered to reduce that to $35 if vactor spent 20 hours listening to classical music by Bach, Beethoven and other composers.

A probation officer says the 24-year-old lasted only about 15 minutes.

Vactor says he chose to pay the higher fine not because of the type of music but because he needed to be at practice with the rest of the Urbana University basketball team.

Champaign County Municipal Court Judge Susan Fornof-Lippencott says her idea was to force Vactor to listen to something he might not prefer, just as the public had to cope with his loud rap music.

DIY Wine Tasting!

A Massachusetts woman who walked into a downtown gourmet food store, opened a bottle of wine and drank from it, was fined Tuesday after pleading guilty to a related charge of disorderly conduct.

Ha Ha, you'll never catch me…oh, wait...

A Kentucky sheriff's deputy accused of killing his ex-girlfriend was captured in Iowa early Tuesday after an officer spotted his car at a hotel.

Randall Creek, 41, of Bowling Green, Ky., was taken into custody without incident shortly after midnight at a motel in Evansdale, about 600 miles from Smiths Grove, Ky., where his ex-girlfriend, Debbie Rediess, was gunned down Sunday.

Black Hawk County sheriff's Capt. Reid Corson said they had information that Creek was in Iowa, and officers started checking motels. A police officer on routine patrol spotted Creek's car at a Days Inn and officers set up surveillance.

"He exited the hotel room unaware that they were there and they grabbed him," Corson said.
