In a city full of delicious, bitter IPAs sometimes you need a traditional German bier and the perfect place to find that is Deft Brewing in Bay Park. This week on Beer for Breakfast Brewmaster Paul Segura brought two German style beers from Deft Brewing for Marty and Danielle to try.
First they sample Fear the Deft Star Kottbusser (5.3%ABV). This historic wheat ale is from around Kottbuss in North Germany and is traditionally brewed with honey and molasses. It is fermented with a less assertive yeast strain, so the Kottbusser lacks the banana/clove character of its Bavarian cousins. Next they move on to Don’t Beat a Deft Horse Dunkelweizen (6.2%ABV), a fun representation of a dark, malt-forward South German wheat beer. Classic banana & clove yeast characteristics are present, but well-balanced by bready, toasty malt flavors, light hops, and medium body.
Deft Brewing is celebrating their WinterBierFest this weekend and have 10 German-inspired beer styles on tap (while supplies last).
