The Strawberry Moons are Aimee Jacobs (vocals, keyboard), Will A Lerner (vocals, keyboard, guitar), Jason Areford (bass), Dustin Schemensky (drums), and newest member Hector Duenas (guitar, vocals). The idea was to form a band that showcased male/female vocals and strong melodies and harmonies, with influences including ’60s baroque/vocal pop, the highly personal and intense folk rock of the 70s, as well as more aggressive and modern post-punk. Knowing her astounding vocal range and considerable skill as a musician, Will approached Aimee about collaborating. Her love of modern psychedelic rock and synth pop seamlessly combined with what Will was already hearing in his head, so writing together was, from the start, a very natural and organic thing. The duo spent considerable time bringing together the right musicians, starting with Will’s former bandmate John Falk on lead guitar and backing vocals. Jason joined up soon after, and wisely suggested they add his long-time friend and bandmate Dustin to complete the line-up in the spring of 2016. In January 2019 Hector took over John’s role in the band; his talent and energy have allowed the group to move forward with no signs of stopping. Over the last three years, The Strawberry Moons have become one of the more active bands on the San Diego music scene, gigging regularly at traditional and non-traditional venues, as well as many local and desert festivals. They toured twice in 2018, playing in cities in Arizona and California, and were nominated for a 2019 San Diego Music Award, Best Rock Band category. The Moons have been featured on the county’s most popular local radio programs (91X Loudspeaker and The Local 94/9), have been the subject of feature articles in SD CityBeat, San Diego Reader and SD Voyager, and have been spotlighted on local television programs SoundDiego (NBC) and Unherd (ABC). They have recently mastered their first full-length album, and released the debut single, “Nicole’s Song,” on 7/24/19. A video was also released with the single, which mirrors the tone and theme of the song. The second single, “Cigarette Hills,” is planned for an early September release, and the whole album will be released on September 24th, with a show on that date at Belly Up.
